Testing your FTP server on Windows for use with MediaTransfer:

ping and nbtstat

Network and Sharing Center

ftp yourcomputername.local

1. First, lets get your computer name - we can use this to enter into the Ftp Path section in MediaTransfer:

You can find the name by clicking the Start menu, selecting Control Panel and then opening Network and Sharing center and looking for your computer name at the top on the left side of the window.

My computer name is JLAURENS-W7 and to use it in mediatransfer I enter JLAURENS-W7.local in the FTP Path field of the MediaTransfer settings...

Lets double-check this...

2. Click on Windows 7 Start Button

3. Go to All Programs-> Accessories

4. Now right on Command Prompt and select “Run as Administrator” from context menu.

5. In the window type nbtstat -n  you should also see your computer name listed in the output.

6. Now that we have confirmed your computer name, lets test to see if we can use that name to connect to your PC....

7. In the window, type  ping yourcomputername.local and hit enter. If you have your computer name correctly identified, you should see responses coming in saying "Reply from...". You can press Control-C to stop the pings.

8. In the new window type in   ftp yourcomputername.local  and hit enter.

If you set up FileZilla, you should be able to connect and enter the username/password to proceed and will see an ftp> prompt.

9. Type   LS   and see if you get a file listing.

If this works, FTP and FileZilla have been set up right.

Next Step: Try connect with MediaTransfer (we may have to change your firewall settings, but lets try MediaTransfer first)
